Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty improves the shape of the nose. It is more popularly called 'nose job' and is also one of the most common cosmetic surgeries performed around the world. The nose is a very prominent feature of the face and attracts a lot of attention when we interact with people. A crooked or deformed nose is a blow to one's confidence and one often spends a lot of time worrying about its shape and size. A nose surgery can correct most of the deformities in the nose and make a nose look more harmonious with one's face.

There are many myths surrounding this popular procedure and the most common among them is that an artificial material is used to change the shape of the nose and it gives an artificial look to the face. In reality, most of the rhinoplasties are done without using any kind of artificial material and the improvement in the shape of the nose comes from removing excess cartilage or adding cartilage where it is deficient, rasping down the bone and arranging and adjusting the tissues around for a better result. Most of the patients after a rhinoplasty gain back their lost confidence. Dr Sharmistha Bhattacharyya is an internationally trained plastic surgeon, offering the best rhinoplasty surgery while giving natural results.

When to Consider Nose Surgery

  • If you are unhappy with the size of your nose or the shape then you can consider a Rhinoplasty.
  • If you think that your nose doesn't suit your face or it is too large or too small.
  • If you feel blocked while breathing and your nose becomes too stuffy and you feel this blockage too often.
  • A nose hump is also a very common reason for which one seeks a rhinoplasty.
  • If you feel that the nose tip is too bulky and lacks a refined shape.
  • If you feel your nose is too broad and your nostrils are too wide.

What are my options?

The nose is usually approached in two manners: External and internal. Looking at the shape of your nose, your rhinoplasty surgeon would be the best person to decide the approach which is best suited to you for a natural result. Apart from the incisions, there are few other variations in the manner in which a rhinoplasty is done. Cartilage is often used from one's own nose to smoothen out irregularities and build up the nose. If the nose cartilage has already been utilized then ear cartilage or rib cartilage may have to be used to get the wanted results.

Silicone is also available for the nose to bring up a depressed nose but being a foreign material, it has the chance of getting infected and rejection. Thus, natural cartilage is the best option to get the required result. Sometimes, fillers or fat grafts may also be injected to smooth the nose, to camouflage deformities or indentations, or to add volume in the areas wherever it is being required. Rhinoplasty surgery offers you with desired results.

Surgical Incisions and Scars

Open rhinoplasty

During the procedure, a small incision is made on the underside of the nose which usually starts fading out with the moving time and heals in a short period of time. Open method is known as the popular method of doing a rhinoplasty because it gives a better view of the deformities and the correction is also achieved better with the open rhinoplasty method. However, the decision is actually taken by the professional rhinoplasty doctor after assessing the nose during the consultation.

Endonasal rhinoplasty

In this method, the incision is inside the nose, offers limited visualization and is best suited for limited changes required for correction of nasal shape.
